Johnny Depp’s Jeanne du Barry—the iconic actor’s first film in four years—is coming soon to digital streaming.

Jeanne du Barry recounts the historical tale about French King Louis XV (Depp) and his last mistress, the commoner Jeanne (Maïwenn). A luminary of French cinema, Maïwenn also directs Jeanne du Barry, which made its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2023.

Vertical Entertainment announced Tuesday that Jeanne du Barry will be released on digital streaming on May 21. The movie will be available on several digital platforms for rental or purchase via premium video on demand.

VUDU—aka Fandango at Home—already has Jeanne du Barry up for preorder for $14.99, which in all likelihood will be the purchase price.

Digital rental prices generally run about $5 less than the purchase price, so Jeanne du Barry should also be available for PVOD rental for $9.99, which can be watched for 48 hours once viewers start the film.

AppleTV+ also has Jeanne du Barry up for preorder, although it has not yet been listed on Prime Video.

Jeanne du Barry only played in limited release in theaters domestically starting on May 2 but had a bigger theatrical release overseas. Domestic numbers are not available because the film was shown in a limited engagement through Fathom Events.

According to The Numbers, Jeanne du Barry—which held its world premiere in London in April—grossed $7.1 million at the international box office. IMDb, meanwhile, reports the film has earned $13.8 million worldwide against a $22.4 million budget.

Naturally, because of Johnny Depp’s involvement in the film—his first feature since his 2020 indie drama Minamata—critics reviewed the film either after it screened in Cannes or before its domestic release in early May.

Rotten Tomatoes critics reacted harshly to Jeanne du Barry, giving it a 45% “rotten” rating based on 74 reviews.

On the flip side, viewers embraced Jeanne du Barry, as the film received a stellar 95% positive Audience Score based on 50-plus verified users.
