Jason Momoa might return in Dune 3, following the way mentioned in Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel.
Hopping from popular projects like Game of Thrones to Aquaman, Jason Momoa finally made his way into the critically acclaimed movie, Dune. Playing the role of Duncan Idaho, who sacrificed himself to save Paul Atreides and his mother, Lady Jessica, Momoa revealed his future with the franchise, despite his character’s death.
Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho in 2021’s Dune
Initially appearing in Denis Villeneuve’s 2021 Dune, Jason Momoa served as a warrior to the House Atreides and a close ally to Paul. But with his demise in the very first installment of the sci-fi franchise, Momoa made his exit from the franchise. But recently speaking with Men’s Health, the actor teased the possibility of his return in the future of Dune, as suggested in Frank Herbert’s 1969 Dune Messiah.
Jason Momoa Hints at His Return in Future Dune Projects
We might get to see more of Jason Momoa in future Dune movies. Previously playing the role of Duncan Idaho in Denis Villeneuve’s first installment, Momoa served as a loyal warrior to the House Atreides and a close ally to Timothée Chalamet‘s Paul Atreides. In the movie, the actor seemingly lost his life, by the end, as he sacrificed himself to save Paul and his mother Lady Jessica.
However, while Jason Momoa had rather less screentime in Dune, and later remained absent as the swordmaster in Dune: Part Two, the actor recently teased his potential return to the franchise. Baffling fans about a surprise return for his character in the third movie, Momoa hinted at an “epic” moment intended for the first film, while speaking with Men’s Health.
Momoa as Duncan Idaho in a still from Dune
“It’ll be a good future now if Duncan Idaho may have some sort of… You know what we did have? Oh man, I can’t actually say this. I’ll get in trouble. F*ck. Well, there was something that was really cool that went into the movie that didn’t make the first one, and it was pretty epic… I’ll try to get it back. I’ll try to get it back in the third one.”
Revealing how his character gets revived in Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel Dune Messiah, which is set to be the inspiration for Dune 3, Jason Momoa opened up about his potential return. Promising his fans that he would try to bring Herbert’s mysterious sequence, should he ever return to the Dune universe for a third film, Momoa offered hope to the moviegoers.
Frank Herbert Teased a Way of Bringing Back the Deceased
Meanwhile, let’s take a look at how Frank Herbert had already revealed a way of bringing back the deceased, 55 years ago, with his 1969 novel – Dune Messiah. According to the novel, Duncan is brought back to life as a ghola, which is like a clone of a deceased individual. As per Herbert, a ghola possesses all the memories of their previous lives, although they are difficult to regain and require time and a specialized method to develop.
In the book, Duncan doesn’t regain his lost memories immediately, but he does play a significant role in the story. Although, Dune: Part Two made massive changes to the storyline, the third installment which is set to be adapted from Dune Messiah must include Duncan, for he plays an essential role in the novels. Therefore, while Dune 2 could do away without Jason Momoa, his appearance in Dune 3 is a must.
Timothée Chalamet in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two
Therefore, going by Frank Herbert’s storyline, as he revealed 55 years back, Duncan Idaho is set to return in the third installment as a ghola. This particular revelation gives a ray of hope to fans as it offers a way to bring back Jason Momoa. While the actor will be more than happy to appear in whatever way Dune 3 brings Duncan back, it’s only a matter of time to see how Denis Villeneuve sets the story.
Dune is available on Max. Dune: Part Two is still running in theaters.
