Alexa Bliss has cosplayed many pop culture looks during her WWE career, but the most popular is when she dresses up as Harley Quinn.
Joining the WWE main roster in 2016, Alexa Bliss would be called up to the SmackDown women’s division during the company’s latest iteration of the brand split. While expectations for her may have been on the lower side, due to a lack of standout performances during her time in NXT and mostly being seen as the manager for Blake and Murphy, fans were taken aback when Bliss became one of the strongest pushed women in the company. Often using her gear to cosplay as characters from pop culture, Alexa Bliss would turn heads in 2016 with a Harley Quinn inspired gear. Following Margot Robbie’s debut as the character in DC’s Suicide Squad film, Harley’s popularity was at an all-time high, and Bliss would play into that by modeling her look after Robbie’s interpretation of the character.
Alexa Bliss Is A Big Fan Of Harley Quinn
Since her main roster debut for WWE, members of the WWE Universe have often compared Alexa Bliss to the famous DC Comics antihero, Harley Quinn. Sharing a similar look and characteristics, the comparison would not be totally unfounded. During a 2017 interview with Yahoo Sports, Alexa would explain her love for Harley and villains in general, stating “I’m such a villain fan. I love comics, I love anything Disney, everyone knows that about me, I’m a big Disney fan, anything that’s fictional, I’m a huge fan of. I just like portraying characters but making it my own. The Harley Quinn thing I was really excited about. I kind of ran with the Harley Quinn thing.” One thing that remains clear as ever is that Alexa Bliss loves her Disney and comic book villains, and she will continue to show it off through her gear in WWE.
Alexa Bliss Debuted A Harley Quinn Look In 2016
Following her arrival onto the WWE main roster, Alexa Bliss would quickly rise up the ranks of the women’s division on WWE’s blue brand, SmackDown Live. Joining the likes of Natalya, Becky Lynch, Nikki Bella, and Carmella, Bliss would stand out as one of the hottest new arrivals for SmackDown following the WWE Draft. By the end of 2016, Bliss would shock the world by defeating Becky Lynch to become SmackDown Women’s Champion. During this period, Alexa would develop her Goddess of WWE character, something that would lead her to becoming one of the most dominant women in the company while on Raw in 2017.
However, sticking with her time on SmackDown in 2016, this would offer fans their first glimpse of Alexa Bliss’ love for Harley Quinn, as she would debut a Harley Quinn inspired gearset later in the year. Sporting blonde pigtails with dyed ends and a colorful get-up highlighted by pink and blue colors, Bliss would give her best impersonation of the famous Batman villain during her rise to superstardom on the blue brand.
While WWE fans may have gotten used to Alexa Bliss standing in as their own version of the famed DC Comics rogue, Bliss would get the chance to not only stand across from the woman portraying the current live-action version of Harley Quinn that inspired her gear, but also to interview her. In 2020, DC would release Birds of Prey, a new female-centered film starring Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn. During the press tour for that film, WWE would manage to get Alexa Bliss to host an interview with Robbie and some of the other cast members.
During the interview, Robbie would state that she loves playing Harley Quinn because, “She’s fun, and she’s unpredictable, and I think that just makes for a super entertaining character.” Alexa Bliss would go onto share her own admiration for the character, explaining why she is one of her favorite comic book characters. The former WWE Women’s Champion would go onto say, “I just love that she’s unapologetically herself, and like you said, unpredictable, and I just love any persona, character, or person that can be themselves and not feel bad about it, and embrace it and embrace how different they are, and I’ve always been a big fan of that.” Comparing the unpredictable nature of Quinn’s character, one can see the comparisons to Bliss, who went from a diva-like “Goddess” character to a crazed, supernatural woman attached to Bray Wyatt’s Fiend gimmick.
