Daniil Medvedev says if you want to know who’s going to win the French Open for the men, just look at the top of the ATP rankings
After his elimination from Rome in the round of 16 by Tommy Paul, Daniil Medvedev speculated on who might be in with a chance of winning Roland-Garros.
And he isn’t looking too far from the top of the rankings – although he admits fitness and injury may well play a part.
“I think we should go by the ranking: Novak [Djokovic]. Jannik [Sinner], if he plays. I don’t know. Carlos [Alcaraz], if he plays. I don’t know,” he said to journalists in his press conference.
“Then it’s me, [world] No 4. Who won Monte-Carlo? Stef [Stefanos Tsitsipas]. If he wins here [in Rome], could be big favourite, for sure. If he wins two Masters 1000s, he’s one of the favourites, too.
“I think if Novak and Carlos play, they’re two big favourites. They like the surface. They can win Grand Slams. But now it’s maybe little bit more open than it was ever before.
“Good for me, too, because usually in Roland-Garros I don’t play that well. The more open it is, the better it is for me.”
Djokovic, Sinner and Alcaraz have all, however, struggled with fitness in recent weeks. Reports from Italy suggest that Sinner is considering skipping Roland-Garros due to a hip injury, while Djokovic is apparently suffering after being struck on the head by a falling water bottle on Friday.
