Coco Gauff won her first Grand Slam doubles title. On Sunday (June 9), Gauff and her doubles partner Katerina Siniakova stormed past Italian pair Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini 7-6(7-5), 6-3 inside the Philippe-Chatrier in 1 hour and 47 minutes to win the trophy.

It was Gauff’s first doubles but eighth one for her Czech partner. They decided to come together due to injuries to their respective partners.

Gauff was set to play with Jessica Pegula, who injured herself earlier in the clay season, while Siniakova was expected to play with either Storm Hunter or Taylor Townsend, both of whom are injured. After the match, Gauff thanked her partner for playing with her.

Who are the next Men’s Tennis Greats?

Thank you, Katerina, for playing with me. We decided two days before the tournament to play together at the very last minute. I wasn't planning on playing doubles. Thank you for asking me to play.

That last-minute decision to pair up did the American-Czech duo more than good, for they ended up becoming the champions. They lost just one set in the entire tournament, which came in the semifinal against the pair of Desirae Krawczyk and Caroline Dolehide.

Coco Gauff reveals why she wanted to play with an American in Roland Garros doubles

Coco Gauff wanted to join hands with an American player because the Olympics was on her mind. As she wanted to play with her compatriot in the Paris Olympics but Jessica Pegula injured herself, Gauff did not intend to participate in the doubles event at the Roland Garros. The 20-year-old then revealed Pegula texted her to pair up with Katerina, who also has an Olympic gold in doubles.

Really, I was trying to find an American to play with because Jessie pulled out, and obviously the Olympics are going to be here. My whole plan at the start of the year was to try to play with somebody I could potentially play with at the Olympics.

Gauff’s singles run in the tournament came to an end when she lost to World No.1 Iga Swiatek 6-2, 6-4. Jasmine Paolini, who was also searching for her maiden doubles title at Roland Garros, played the doubles final a day after losing easily to Swiatek in the singles final with scores of 6-2, 6-1. Sara Errani, on the other hand, is a five-time major champion in doubles, winning in all four events, including the 2012 French Open.
