Danielle Collins continues to have a more exciting final year. The American player broke her fans’ hearts when she announced her retirement. However, her final year has been filled with accomplishments, and she is bound to get better. Collins will make her way to the 2024 Paris Olympics, as the French Open helped her boost her ranking.
Despite much better form on clay in 2024, Collins found herself ousted in round 2 of the French Open. She lost 7-6, 5-7, 4-6 to Olga Danilovic. Her position in the Olympic team was threatened as Emma Navarro was still in the tournament but needed to reach the final. However, since she lost 6-2, 6-3 to Aryna Sabalenka in the fourth round, she will not be able to join the team, giving way to Collins.
Bastien Fachan, a tennis journalist, shared the news, “In her final year on tour, Danielle Collins has officially qualified for her first Olympics. The cut to make the US team ended up being top 16 in the world (!) over the 52-week period up to 2024 Roland-Garros. She will finish 10-11. The Year of Danielle 💅.“
The women’s US Olympic team comprises Coco Gauff, Jessica Pegula, Danielle Collins, and Madison Keys. Gauff and Pegula did not have to worry about their sport. Keys, Collins, and Navarro had to fight for spots three and four. If Navarro had reached the final of Roland-Garros, she would have made the team.
Therefore, even after her round 2 exit, Collins has found her way to the Olympic team. Collins has never played for the US in the Olympics before, but she shared dreams of winning gold for her country.
Danielle Collins wants to go out in a blaze of glory for country
Winning the Miami Open and the Charleston Open back-to-back was a dream come true for Collins. The two titles helped her even bigger, and she dreamt about the Olympics. She shared her dreams with the world, after the round of 16 in the Charleston Open, “I would love nothing more to represent my country. My favorite memories on the court are honestly the weeks at the Billie Jean King Cup. There’s nothing, nothing like it.”
She further described how she is friends with the top 4 women in the US, Gauff, Pegula, Keys, and Navarro. Collins did see a possibility of not qualifying for the team, though, “So no matter who ends up going to the Olympics, we’re going to have a really fierce team and, I’m excited about it either way, whether I play, or I don’t, I’m really excited to see how we do at the Olympics this year.”
She has made it to the team and will fight tooth and nail to realize her dream. As she focuses on grass, her mind will surely be thinking of the future as well. Although final, this will be the year she will remember most fondly.
