Caitlin Clark and Co. will have to wait a little longer for their first win. For the second consecutive night, an impressive collective effort couldn’t result in a positive outcome as a fighting Indiana Fever team went down 84-88 at home. This defeat will be a tough pill to swallow for the entire unit. Simply because at multiple junctures of the contest, it looked like Indiana might get the desired outcome. Reflecting further on it, Clark expressed her disappointment in the post-game press conference.
She began by complimenting the crowd and said, “Our crowd was incredible. Our fans were incredible. You can see the progress that this team is making.” Soon after, the NCAA’s all-time leading scorer shifted her focus on the loss while evaluating her team’s efforts.
She added, “This one hurts a lot because we were right there and we had plenty of opportunities to go win the game and then you don’t. Just some things that we do to ourselves. They kill us on points off turnovers, on board points, just the little things. They made a lot of free throws than we did.”
The stats provide further evidence of what Caitlin Clark is trying to convey. Despite holding an upper hand in field goals (47.8%) and three-pointers (6 of 20), the team lagged behind on several other fronts. Connecticut won 30 free throws, out of which they were able to convert 24. Indiana’s conversion rate was better, with 12 of their 13 attempts ending in the back of the basket.
The one area that requires significant improvement is the turnover numbers. The visitors only had 8 turnovers, whereas Indiana registered more than double with their tally reaching 17. They won’t have much time to work on their shortcomings as Seattle will be waiting for them next.
Caitlin Clark can face an old foe next
The 2024 Final Four encounter between UConn and Iowa was an absolute blockbuster. More so because it involved a battle between two classy college basketball athletes. Something similar is expected at the Climate Pledge Arena on Wednesday. According to some sources, Nika Muhl is expected to make her WNBA debut in this Eastern Conference matchup.
Consequently, fans might have a chance to witness a Caitlin Clark and a Nika Muhl face-off for the second time in two months. Anyhow, the announcement of Muhl’s availability is yet to be made official.
The competition is getting tougher and tougher for Caitlin Clark and the 2012 champions. However, there has been a significant refinement in their game overall. Still, Christie Sides will look to work on the gray areas that are remaining.
