PEOPLE can exclusively reveal that the stars from the 1993 sequel will back together for an episode of ‘The View’ set to air Wednesday, June 5 on ABC
Oh happy day! The stars of Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit are reuniting!
PEOPLE can exclusively reveal that Whoopi Goldberg will get back together with her former costars from the 1993 sequel for an episode of The View set to air Wednesday, June 5 on ABC.
Kathy Najimy (Sister Mary Patrick) and Wendy Makkena (Sister Mary Robert) — who starred alongside Goldberg in the first Sister Act film as well — are among the alums who will appear in the special, which was filmed at the end of May in New York City.
All is in celebration of Sister Act 2‘s 30th anniversary. The film, a follow-up to the beloved 1992 original, followed Goldberg’s Deloris Van Cartier as she once again assumes her nun persona of Sister Mary Clarence to lead the high school choir at her alma mater in hopes of keeping the facility from closing.

Leading the movie alongside Goldberg was Lauryn Hill, as standout student singer Rita Watson. She doesn’t appear in a preview for The View reunion episode, but Sheryl Lee Ralph – who played Florence Watson, Rita’s disapproving mother — does.
Ryan Toby (Ahmal) and Tanya Trotter (Tanya) will also be part of the fun. The two singers went on to fine fame in the music industry following their Sister Act 2 roles, he as part of the R&B trio City High and she with the Grammy nominated duo The War & Treaty.
Additional cast members from the film are expected to appear, as well as “a surprised for Whoopi she didn’t see coming.” There will also be performances with music supervisor Marc Shaiman and composer Mervyn Warren of at least two of the biggest songs from the film: “Joyful, Joyful” and “Oh Happy Day.”

Goldberg, 68, is currently in pre-production on Sister Act 3, the third film from the series. She recently told PEOPLE the script had been completed for the movie, which Walt Disney Studios announced was in development in 2020 with Tyler Perry as producer.
Not much is known about the plot of the newest installment or the casting — though Najimy and Makkena are likely to return if their inclusion here is any indication.
“He said he’d see what his time was like,” Goldberg joked about the Pope’s interest, on a May 2024 appearance on The Tonight Show.

She also invited Ralph to return to the franchise. And made a public plea to Dame Maggie Smith, who starred in both Sister Act films as Mother Superior, to come back to the franchise too.
Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time The View has staged a Sister Act reunion. Back in 2017, in honor of the initial film’s 25th anniversary, Goldberg, Najimy and Makkena got back together on the daytime show, alongside costars Sherri Izzard, Darlene Koldenhoven, Beth Fowler, Andrea Robinson and Prudence Holmes.
After talking about the legacy of the film and sharing their favorite memories of making it, all performed “I Will Follow Him” together with Shaiman sitting in on the piano for actress Rose Perenti (Sister Alma), who died in 1996.
