The Bucks have work to do to keep Giannis Antetokounmpo happy.
The Milwaukee Bucks were bounced in the first round of the playoffs for a second straight year. It was a major disappointment for a franchise in a championship or bust season. They made an all-in trade for Damian Lillard and two head coaching changes over the last year. The Bucks certainly felt the pressure to build a title contender around Giannis Antetokounmpo, but what now?Milwaukee Bucks, Giannis Antetokounmpo / Benny Sieu-USA TODAY SportsThe Greek Freak missed the playoffs with a calf injury (subscription required). They need him healthy to be a title contender, but changes will be made this offseason. Malik Beasley is expected to depart in free agency, and the Bucks will attempt to upgrade, despite being light on draft capital.
Keeping Giannis happy in Milwaukee is their top priority. It took significant roster shakeups last summer and may take more in 2024. The Bucks must be ready to make these potential moves.
5. Convince free agents to take less to join the Bucks
With the new tax apron rules in place, this becomes more important than ever. Malik Beasley, Jae Crowder, and Patrick Beverley were all on minimum contracts and played key roles on the Bucks this season. Beasley was a starter and key floor spacer for most of the season before Pat Bev took over that role in the playoffs.
Milwaukee has $182.8 million committed in salary for next season on just ten players. They project to be over the second tax apron after filling out their roster. The Bucks will be limited to just minimum signings, but they need production from them.
Can they convince a couple of veterans to take less to chase a championship in Milwaukee? After two straight first-round playoff exits, it won’t be easy, but the Bucks’ willingness to go all-in gives them hope. Making it a reality is a must if they plan on keeping Giannis happy, but it is far from the only thing on the to-do list.
