Former World No.1 calls Novak Djokovic the best player in the game despite injury struggles.
“He is almost unbeatable!” Mats Wilander feels Novak Djokovic ‘remains the best’ despite losing No. 1 ranking to Jannik Sinner

Former world no.1 and seven-time Grand Slam champion, Mats Wilander, has been working as a tennis analyst and presenter off late and often puts forth his opinions on the state of the sport based on his expertise.

The Swede thinks Novak Djokovic is still the best player in the world, despite losing his title as the world no.1 and having to pull out of the French Open and maybe even Wimbledon. He highlighted that Jannik Sinner has had the best year so far, but Djokovic remains the defending champion at the US Open and the ATP Finals.

He credited Djokovic’s grit, saying he goes into ‘Djoko mode’ whenever he finds himself under pressure, which lets him make miraculous comebacks. As long as Djokovic is playing, he’ll remain the best for Wilander,

I know very well that Sinner has just had an exceptional first part of the season and that the computer is not lying, but I also don’t forget that Novak remains the defending champion at the US Open and the Masters (ATP Finals), and that he was a finalist at Wimbledon a year ago. As long as he is there, for me, he remains the best. And we saw in his end of the match against Cerundolo that, even injured, when he goes into ‘Djoko mode’, he is almost unbeatable.

Wilander to L’Equipe as quoted by Tennis365.

Following the praise, Wilander raised concerns about Djokovic’s chances of making it to the lush green lawns of Wimbledon, hinting that it is unlikely the Serb will play there after his surgery.

I think that for him, I’m worried about him playing Wimbledon, to be honest. I’m sorry to the tennis world, but the grass is a dangerous surface if you’re trying to come back from meniscus surgery.

Wilander added.

He admitted his disappointment about probably not being able to see Djokovic in action on grass this season as he wanted to see him compete against more youngsters in thrilling matches, as he has done in the past.

Mats Wilander hailed Nadal as the most important tennis player ever earlier this year

Rafael Nadal is often known for his intense style of play which influenced and shaped an entire generation of players that followed. His game also pushed players like Federer to adapt to the new ways of tennis by using bigger rackets and getting into more rallies.

Mats Wilander recognized that Nadal pushed his biggest rivals, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, to new heights, calling him the most important player in professional tennis due to this.

He's one of the greatest players of all time, and maybe the most important professional tennis player of all time.
