What could go wrong in Paris? Apparently a lot! While Coco Gauff is preparing to tackle her fourth-round opponent at the French Open, her coach, Brad Gilbert was shocked by an off-court experience. While visiting a different country comes with a variety of novel culinary experiences, can serving raw chicken be excused? Gilbert says no.
The coach was livid with his recent dining experience and took to X to share his ordeal in a series of tweets. “Need to vent just had a 2+ hr dinner 🥘 at my hotel 🏨 that was beyond shocking 😳 1st time eating there for dinner in 14 days, took forever and they served Zoe raw chicken 🍗 then brought back after 45 mins with same silverware 🥄 on table and got everything wrong on my order…..” his first tweet read. But his bad experience didn’t stop there.
The coach was craving a cozy dinner after Gauff, who is aiming for her second Grand Slam victory, advanced to the French Open quarterfinals. To guarantee her place in the final eight, the American defeated Elisabetta Cocciaretto with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 victory in the fourth round. After this victory, Gilbert, together with his daughter Zoe, decided to have dinner at his hotel for the first time. And that’s when things went wrong.
In a follow-up tweet, the coach mentioned that he tipped the waitress 125 euros because he felt bad about her plight. “Very strange to say the least and packed on a Sunday, completely under staffed total misplay by us should have left,” he wrote.
What’s shocking about his experience is that Paris is a huge tourist destination and sees a lot of international tourists. In 2023, about 36.9 million tourists visited Greater Paris. In fact, the hotel occupancy rate also went up by 75.2%. In fact, there was a decline in domestic tourism and a 14.6% rise in international customers.
With the 2024 Paris Olympics just around the corner, the city will see a record number of international visitors, and hence, as per the information available, they have already started preparations.
But coming back to Gilbert, he went on to berate the service further. “And looked at us like hmm & about serving raw chicken brutal when asked for clean silverware.” Additionally, the American made an amusing comment about feeling compelled to tell Christopher Eubanks about their service. “Was trying to like heck to just get check to get the heck out of there, amazingly it’s crowded and both tables next to us have exactly 👍 the same issues, and saw @ChrisEubankJr walk in to sit down 🪑 felt massively obligated to tell him don’t do it run 🏃♂️to another place asap.” However, he did not name the hotel.
Brad Gilbert simply loves food!
Are you wondering why Gilbert was so annoyed by some bad food? Sure, it is an inconvenience. But the truth is he is a big foodie and likes good food. Perhaps he wasn’t expecting Paris to disappoint.
Just in March, he appreciated a great culinary experience. He took to X and wrote, “went to Joes last night in south beach @joesstonecrab standing ovation how amazing the jumbo claws were @cbfowler beyond how amazing the food is , the service is simply off the charts.”
But right now, food is not his priority. Gauff is. Her improvement is palpable. She has already qualified for the quarterfinal in Paris and will soon battle with Ons Jabeur. As she moves ahead in the tournament, Coco Gauff also explains why she has an advantage when it comes to playing on clay.
Coco Gauff’s fourth-round match against Elisabetta Cocciaretto ended with her winning in straight sets. The former quarterfinalist of the French Open (2023) is now a few steps away from clinching her second grand slam. But what is the reason behind her swift movements on clay?
She explained it recently by stating, “I’m lucky to have been able to train on clay since I was 10, which is not common for most Americans.” The world No. 3 further added, “It’s something that I work on. I do like to slide for some of those crazy drop shots, and sometimes I do surprise myself.”
Therefore, the anticipation is high among fans, who will now wait for her upcoming performances on-court. As the Roland Garros tournament unfolds, Coco Gauff will continue achieving milestones on-court with Brad Gilbert’s support. Although the restaurant debacle left a bitter taste in his mouth, Gilbert knows what to truly focus on helping Gauff fulfill her dream in Paris.
Let’s not forget that Coco Gauff is a 2022 runner-up in Paris. So winning it in 2024 is important for her. Do you think she will? Let us know in the comments below.
