The Controversial Painting of Princess Kate Middleton

A painting of Kate Middleton has attracted mixed reactions from royal fans after its debut on May 22.

The controversial Kate Middleton drawing, painted by Zambian-British artist Hannah Ustor, appeared on the cover of the July 2024 issue of Tatler magazine in a series of royal portraits.

Uzor was inspired by the costume of the Princess of Wales at a state banquet in November 2022 – the first party under King Charles’s reign.

Kate Middleton (42 years old) wore a long white dress covering her legs with crystal-studded shoulders to the event. She sparkled even more with her crown, Princess Diana’s pearl and diamond earrings and Queen Elizabeth’s pearl bracelet. The mother of three completes the look with a blue diagonal ribbon. All are depicted in Uzor’s portrait.

Kate Middleton was battling cancer, unable to sit down to take pictures, so Uzor sifted through thousands of photos to paint her.

“I spent a lot of time observing Middleton, looking at her photos and videos, seeing her with her family, seeing her on diplomatic visits, seeing her rowing or visiting children in the ghetto,” Uzor said in a video.

While Tatler magazine described the finished work as a portrait of “strength, dignity and courage,” many people reacted.

“The portrait is disappointing. A very ugly picture and completely does not show the beauty and elegance of the Princess of Wales,” one writer and another agreed.

“What a terrible picture for a beautiful woman,” a third added.

Meanwhile, others called the image “funny” and asked if the poster was “joking”.

“Doesn’t look like Princess Kate Middleton at all. At first I thought it was a joke,” another wrote. However, there are also supporters of the painting. “This is amazing,” one person commented. “It’s beautiful,” someone else commented.
