Last week, Rolls-Royce caused a stir among enthusiasts by unveiling the Boat Tail, a super-luxury convertible valued at $28 million, featuring an opulent storage compartment in the trunk. Rolls-Royce did not disclose the owner of this world’s most expensive new model, but according to sources such as The Telegraph, the owner of this ultra-luxurious car is none other than the couple Jay-Z and Beyoncé.

The Telegraph discovered that one of the three Boat Tails produced by Rolls-Royce was made for the superstar couple Beyoncé and rapper Jay-Z. With assets exceeding $1 billion as of 2021, Jay-Z is hailed as the world’s first billionaire rapper. Let’s take a look at the car specially made for this wealthy couple.

Unlike the Phantom or Ghost, which are expensive cars for the masses, the Boat Tail is a car that the British automaker creates exclusively for one or a few ultra-wealthy individuals. They collaborate and develop the car according to their personal preferences and tastes.

For example, this convertible Boat Tail is said to be used by Jay-Z and Beyoncé at the Côte d’Azur, a Mediterranean coastal area they frequently visit. This is also why the car has a blue color and several features that I will mention below.

According to Torsten Müller-Ötvös, the CEO of Rolls-Royce, this is the most ambitious project his company has developed. Only three Boat Tails were produced, and it took four years to develop them. With a price of $28 million, the Boat Tail is more than twice as expensive as another special car, the Sweptail, which was priced at $14 million and launched in 2017.

“Coachbuilt” is the most accurate term to describe how the British create these unique, highly customized cars for their clients. The Boat Tail and Sweptail are examples of this.

The Boat Tail owned by Beyoncé and Jay-Z is inspired by a car of the same name from 1932 that the couple owns. This is a two-door, four-seat car that is nearly 6 meters long. During the development process, Rolls-Royce’s design engineers often visited the owner’s residence to discuss the features and specifications of the car.

Like the Phantom, the Boat Tail is equipped with a 6.75-liter V12 engine and a custom aluminum frame to suit the car. Only the engine and chassis are shared with the Phantom because the Boat Tail has 1,813 new and customized components.

Even the Phantom’s sound system had to be redesigned to ensure it operates optimally in the Boat Tail.

The car features two refrigerators in the rear, one of which is designed to hold champagne, catering to the owners’ preferences. During relaxed outings, the owners can bring out two chairs to sit on the beach, under the umbrella attached to the car’s rear, and enjoy drinks and food.

Alex Innes, Head of Rolls-Royce’s Coachbuild design department, hinted at this, saying, “I had many meetings with the owners of this new car at their home and was warmly welcomed. They love to serve food in the mezze style, so we discussed storage and top-class luxury as a part of this car.

We conducted test drives with all items on board at speeds of 250 km/h just to ensure there were no rattles from the storage.”

Finally, the Boat Tail is finished with various shades of blue throughout the car. However, one specific color in the interior appears to be called Blue Ivy, also the name of Jay-Z and Beyoncé’s nine-year-old daughter.
