Jewellery experts have revealed Kate’s struggles in maintaining royal heirlooms.

Owning a historic royal heirloom like the Princess of Wales’ engagement ring comes with perks and challenges that not everyone fully understands, experts say.

Ben Roberts, CEO of Clogau – the brand responsible for the Welsh gold used by the British Royal Family to make the wedding ring that Princess Kate is wearing – recently revealed to HELLO! magazine about the difficulties in maintaining Kate’s ring, which was previously owned by her late mother-in-law, the late Princess Diana.

“Most people are unaware of the maintenance involved when wearing an heirloom,” says Ben Roberts. “Even without any alterations, ‘caring’ for such a valuable heirloom has its own challenges.

Kate and her assistants will need to perform careful maintenance, regular inspections and in-depth assessments, gentle cleaning to restore the shine. And, if necessary, professional repairs to ensure its longevity.

That way, she can continue to wear it every day and maintain a constant connection to the past while remaining connected to the present, as a beloved senior member of the British Royal Family.”

Mr Ben Roberts’ comments came after Princess Kate confirmed that she had not altered the ring in any way since it was given to her by Prince William in 2010.

It was previously reported that the ring was too large for Kate, and she went to jewellers G. Collins and Sons to add tiny platinum beads hidden inside the ring to reduce its diameter. She did not make any significant changes, nor did she break or re-weld the band.

Ben Roberts added that Kate’s decision to keep the original ring “sets her apart” from other members of the British royal family.

The jeweler said: “It is not unheard of for the British royal family to change precious engagement rings. Last year, Meghan’s engagement ring went missing for months, leaving fans wondering. It turned out to have been repaired.

William proposed to Kate during a trip to Kenya with friends in 2010. The Prince of Wales admitted that he carried the ring in his backpack for three weeks before popping the question. He joked to ITV: “I knew if this thing disappeared I would be in a lot of trouble.”

The couple married in April 2011 at Westminster Abbey, with Kate wearing a second wedding ring on her left hand.

In keeping with royal tradition, her wedding ring was made from gold from the Clogau St David mine in North Wales, the same rare Welsh gold used in the jewellery of the late Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Camilla and Princess Anne.
