It’s been a long, long time since Meghan Markle crossed the Atlantic to visit with her in-laws and Prince Harry is opening up about why. In ITV’s new documentary, Tabloids on Trial, which does a deep dive into Harry’s court case against newspaper publishers in the U.K., the Duke of Sussex opened up about why the prospect of bringing his wife and children, Archie and Lilibet, to his home country seems like too big of a risk.

Commenting on whether or not the documentary and the court case were bringing him more unwanted attention, Harry said, “There is more than enough attention on me and my wife anyway.”

“They pushed me too far,” he added. “It got to a point where you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. But I don’t think there’s anybody in the world better suited and placed to be able to see this through than myself.”

He went on to say that he’s concerned for the safety of his family and that all it takes is one person with the wrong intentions to put everyone in danger. Anyone keeping up with the royal family knows that Harry requested a security detail for himself and his family when everyone’s in England and that the Firm refused his proposal.

“It’s still dangerous, and all it takes is one lone actor, one person who reads this stuff to act on what they have read. And whether it’s a knife or acid, whatever it is, and these are things that are of genuine concern for me. It’s one of the reasons why I won’t bring my wife back to this country.”

After moving to California and stepping away from her role as a senior royal, Meghan has only been back to England a few times, including Queen Elizabeth’s funeral in 2022. Harry has been back to deal with legal proceedings, Invictus Games events, and recently to see King Charles after he announced his cancer diagnosis.

During the documentary, Harry also spoke about how the tabloids play into the “rift” in the royal family. He is in the middle of civil cases against the publishers of The Mail and The Sun.

“I think that’s certainly a central piece to it,” Harry explained, pointing out that his family refused to support him in seeking restitution against the tabloids for hacking his phone. “That’s a hard question to answer because anything I say about my family results in a torrent of abuse from the press.”

“I’ve made it very clear that this is something that needs to be done. It would be nice if we did it as a family,” he finished. “I believe that, again, from a service standpoint and when you’re in a public role, that these are the things that we should be doing for the greater good. But I’m doing this for my reasons. I think everything’s that played out has shown people what the truth of the matter is. For me, the mission continues. But it has caused part of a rift.”
