With every game they play, the rookies are raising the bar of the WNBA this season. Their emergence has certainly brought a newfound energy to the court, keeping the vets on their toes as fans continue to show up in numbers. Such is the case with Cameron Brink as well. The Stanford alumna has been a defensive force since her time in the NCAA and is continuing that trend in the WNBA as well. Last night, she dropped an impressive career-high stat line and so far, has outshone her fellow rookies Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese in one regard.
In today’s tight contest against the Dallas Wings at Crypto.com Arena, the Sparks lost 83-84 in front of over 10,000 supporters. However, Sparks rookie Cameron Brink scored a career-high 21 points along with 3 blocks. She has become the WNBA’s leader with 3.2 blocks per game and if she is able to maintain that average, she might make history. The 22-year-old is in line to become the youngest player in history to lead the league in blocks.
Alongside her brilliant defensive efforts, Brink is averaging 10.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. In the game against Dallas, Brink added 2 rebounds, 3 assists, and 3 impressive blocks and caught the spotlight.
The glimpse of her dominance was already becoming visible in the preseason when she swatted away a layup by a Seattle Storm player in the opening moments of the game. This only tells about the level of awareness Brink has in understanding court vision and reading her opponent’s next move to create her ‘Brink Wall’.
Now, the anticipation is building up strongly in fans after Brink’s impressive feat today as the LA Sparks will be locking horns with Caitlin Clark and Co. on Wednesday, with both teams in desperate need of a win.
Indiana Fever to host LA Sparks for the next game
The next game will bring Cameron Brink and Caitlin Clark face to face for the second time this season. And, today’s display by Brink speaks volumes of her growth in reaching up in scoring as well as strengthening her shot-blocking prowess. The paint queen is going beyond and making 3s at an impressive rate of 43%.
On the other hand, Clark too, is starting to show glimpses of her greatness. The NCAA’s all-time leading scorer is renowned for her shooting and playmaking prowess on the court. She is one of the most difficult players to guard. Clark is currently averaging 15.4 points and 6.3 assists per game, leading rookies in both categories. She is also third among rookies in rebounds with 5.4 per game.
While both of them have been improving as individuals, their teams are struggling on the court. The Sparks are 1-4 and the Fever are 1-6. This Wednesday, the fans will be sitting on the edge of their seats waiting for another fierce game when these two rookies engage in a sporty scuffle again.
