World No. 1 Novak Djokovic was overwhelmed after his opening win in Geneva this Wednesday. The Serbian beat unseeded German Yannick Hanfmann 6-3, 6-3 in the Round of 16. His quarter-final opponent is yet to be decided.

However, Djokovic believes that his opening round wasn’t the most important thing today. The Serbian states that his 37th birthday held a lot more significance. At this age, it is clear that the Belgrade native is enjoying everything the tennis tour gives him for the rest of his career.

Key was the birthday. It wouldn't be the same if I haven't won this--It's nice to be here and meet with my family, aunt that I grew up with. Have had a really warm welcome and thank you everybody for the song. Overall, I am happy with match.

Novak Djokovic said in the post-match interview

With the win over Hanfmann, Djokovic became only the third player in tennis history to secure 1100 match wins, joining former rival Roger Federer and the legend Jimmy Connors in achieving this accomplishment. He is aiming for his 99th career singles title in Switzerland and the first of 2024.

Novak Djokovic: A man on a mission in Geneva

After a challenging first five months of 2024, now is the time to get serious for Novak Djokovic. The World No.1 has faced a tough start to the season with no career titles and zero final appearances.

His best results have come at the Australian Open and Monte Carlo, where he reached the semi-finals. Unfortunately, his Australian Open title defense was halted by eventual champion Jannik Sinner, and he suffered his first loss to Casper Ruud in Monte Carlo.

However, a wildcard in Geneva presents the now 37-year-old with an opportunity to dust himself off. Like the rest of the top players, the Serbian will face an exhausting schedule ahead.

The 24-time Grand Slam champion will defend his title at Roland Garros. Following that, he will turn his focus towards Wimbledon, where he has won seven times. Then, he will shift his attention to Paris for the Olympic Games in pursuit of his gold medal dream. Shortly after, he will focus on the US Open, where he is also the defending champion. Hence, the time is critical for Djokovic to get back to winning ways and gain momentum.
